Kaela's birthday celebrations started with a "together party" with Emma, her BFF, who turned 4 2 weeks before Kaela. They have become such close friends and have been looking forward to this party since at least last summer. Surrounded by friends and family they played at Circuits in Alameda and had pizza and Tucker's ice-cream cakes (yum!!!). To help celebrate Auntie Keren and Uncle Derren flew in for the day with Ari, Dahlia, and Isaac and Nana, Papa, Devon, and Erica drove up from Santa Barbara. After Circuits the after-party was full of family and cousins - for the first time all 6 cousins (Kaela-4yrs, Ari-3.5yrs, Zoe-8mo, Dahlia-5mo, Isaac-5mo, and Colin-4mo) were together. Kaela opened her presents and promptly wore the second gift she opened - a new Cinderella dress and matching shoes that light up - while she opened the rest.
On her actual birthday Ryan took her for a special morning bun at Jay's before school, and I made cupcakes to bring at snack time to share with the Fuzzy friends. Kaela's had purple icing with sprinkles (as requested) and the rest had pink frosting with sparkles. The friends sang "Happy Birthday" in English and Spanish, and Kaela proudly helped to pass out the cupcakes. She was glowing! With all of the changes that have occurred since Colin was born, I was so happy for Kaela to have these days that were truly focused on her.
Who is Kaela at 4 years old? Although her true love is still the Disney princesses, she is now enamored with My Little Ponies - the cartoon and the figures. The ponies go with her most places now, and they have settled in nicely in our home. She still loves to dress up and "go to the ball/wedding/party" or simply just hang out in a princess costume. If she is not deciding which costume to wear, she is deciding which outfit to wear - usually a dress with leggings or tights, on occasion a shirt and skirt with leggings or tights, or rarely just a shirt and pants (but definitely not jeans). Her sense of "matching" is interesting but as long as she is dressed appropriately for the weather, anything goes. My shoes are often part of the outfit around the house, and she can get along pretty well heels! She loves to do art projects and especially to draw and color, and it fun to see how her pictures have evolved over the years. Ryan gave her a sketch book which she is busy filling with flowers, houses, the sky and sun, people, and rainbows, as well as ponies, her name and other letters. Since Colin was born she has become more content just staying at home and doing things around the house, but she does still love to ride her scooter or bike and play at the park as well. Fortunately reading continues to be something she loves, and her book collection has become quite large. Her current favorites include the Elephant and Piggy series (thanks for introducing them to us Ari!) and the collection of stories for 4 year olds. Kaela is full of personality too. I have always called her a spirited girl, and that still holds true at 4 years. She has strong opinions about things (what to do, what to wear, what to eat, who she may or may not like that day) and once she has made up her mind, it is almost impossible to change it - she does not fall for any of the parenting "tricks" that I know worked on us as children! She likes to be aware of the schedule - whether it is simply knowing what type of day it is (preschool, dance, mama/Colin/Kaela or mama work day, etc) or when things may happen (like going to the park "the day after this day" - aka tomorrow). I think perhaps she felt like she lost a bit of control when Colin was born and knowing what to expect each day helps her regain that sense of control in her life. She is a sweet older sister and tries to entertain Colin a lot, especially when he cries. He adores her and watches her intently when she is around.

Your creativity, imagination, intelligence, and spirit are special gifts that you share with all of us, and your curiosity and questions remind us to stop and take in the world from a fresh perspective.
